MACK: Tree Trimming & Vegetation Removal Update

Thank you for support the MACK Rehabilitation Project!

The historic Hotel Keturah (c. 1910) was designated on the National Register of Historic Sites in 1985.

MACK: Tree Trimming & Vegetation Removal Update

The McCormick Arts Council at the Keturah (MACK) is currently advancing essential tree work and vegetation clearing at the historic Hotel Keturah property. This work follows a recent ISA Certified Arborist assessment and aligns with industry best practices. These improvements are being completed in collaboration with the Town of McCormick to support public safety, protect historic resources, and prepare the building for major roof repair and replacement.

Due to recent weather conditions and the holiday schedule, crews were able to mobilize this week to ensure the MACK remains on track to meet end-of-year stewardship and construction goals. Community members may notice crews, equipment, and temporary roadway limitations during this period.

Arborist Findings and Tree Work

An updated arborist report (October 2024) identified two mature pecan trees on MACK property that have undergone significant decline and now pose safety hazards. Removal is currently in progress, along with the management of laurel oak trees located on Town property that are encroaching upon the MACK building. These trees have the potential to cause both cosmetic and structural damage, and the arborist notes that “the canopy is too low on the road side for vehicle traffic or emergency response vehicles.”

A future site plan will follow conservation guidelines, including replanting two trees for every tree removed.

Vegetation Clearing Required for Historic Preservation

Vegetation clearing includes the removal of ivy, invasive overgrowth, and small trees growing too close to the structure. This work is being performed in accordance with guidance from state historic preservation agencies. Overgrown vegetation can trap moisture, obscure maintenance issues, and accelerate the deterioration of historic masonry. Clearing these areas protects the building envelope, improves visibility for ongoing restoration work, and ensures long-term compliance with preservation standards.

Recent vegetation removal has also revealed structural decline in the retaining wall, allowing for future planning to address these onsite needs.

This investment safeguards new utilities and recently installed HVAC equipment, helping protect the facility’s infrastructure and ensuring the MACK can maintain its capital improvements for generations to come.

Coordination With Town Projects & Public Safety — Gentle Reminders

  • Scheduled work this week overlaps with the Town of McCormick’s paving work related to the Veterans Park project. As a result, portions of the roadway may be temporarily restricted.
  • The public is encouraged to use caution when entering this area.
  • Onsite crews and managers will assist essential passersby to ensure safety and efficient movement around active work zones.
  • The MACK remains an active construction site and is not open to the public at this time. This includes the parking area in front of the building and any construction or landscape equipment staged onsite.

A note from our team …

As we prepare for major roof repairs, it is essential to complete exterior site work, including tree management and vegetation clearing. These improvements help keep us on track as we near completion of our Phase II investment and work toward our 2025 construction goals. Our final chapter is ahead, and we look forward to delivering the remaining phase in the near future.

Thank you to our community for supporting this generational investment. We hope everyone enjoys the wonderful holiday activities throughout McCormick, and we appreciate your patience as we continue caring for the historic Hotel Keturah.”
